Being a Vienna personal trainer for 20 years, without a doubt one of the most frustrating, if not most frustrating, experiences you may encounter in the fitness game is hitting a plateau. So what do you do when progress comes to a halt, and frustration sets in? How do you battle through a plateau, and what are the best ways to do so? Let’s take a look.
First, let’s discuss why you’re hitting a plateau. Remember, exercise is the stimulus for your body to change. Your body always wants to maintain normal state or homeostasis, and always wants to have the resources available to combat any physical stimulus you throw at it. However, as human beings we tend to do the same things over and over and over again. So what happens? Well, you hit a plateau. When your body has the resources to withstand the intensity and overload that you levy upon it, it has no reason to change or go through any adaptations. So what do you need to do?
The answer is go back to the drawing board. Hopefully you have been keeping a fitness journal where you have been documenting your exercise routines, sets, reps, weights, you name it. What you need to do is take a look at what you have been doing, and turn it upside down. Change the order of your exercises, change the weights you are using, change your mode of activity, you name it. But the at the end of the day what you’re looking to do here is throw your body a curve-ball and shock it. Try drop sets, supersets, whatever necessary but you have to shock your body and this will take you through your plateau.
Remember, getting frustrated and giving up cannot be an option. We all hit plateaus at one time or another, so we have all been there. Remember, this is a game of you versus you. Don’t let your body win, and just like you would in any other aspect of life, go back to the drawing board and be ready to get back on the grind.
So if I were to give any advice, it is to expect plateaus at some point or another throughout this journey that we call fitness.
